What comes to mind when you hear the phrase collective giving? Or annual fund support? These are terms we use often at McGill and in the Faculty when asking our alumni for financial support. Did you know that, because of this collective giving/annual fund support, we have been able to endow scholarships and fellowships, upgrade labs by purchasing much needed equipment, and build new facilities such as the Food and Nutrition Laboratories and the Library and Learning Centre? This is powerful! All gifts from $10 – $25,000 flow through the McGill Fund/Annual Fund, and this form of support is what we call annual giving.
In 2019, 1,044 donors/alumni gave $410,262 to the Annual Fund/Faculty
Alumni commitment and support has transformed what was Macdonald College – in its time an impressive centre of excellence – into a world-renowned Faculty led by researchers on the cutting edge of applied science and students committed to making a difference in the world.
Add to your gift with the Finalyson Enhancement Award
In 2009, alumnus Peter Finlayson, BScAgr’63, and his sister, the late Janet Finlayson, BSc(HEc)’59, BLS’63, endowed the Archie and Marjorie Finlayson Annual Alumni Enhancement Fund, which is commonly referred to as the Finlayson Enhancement Award. This innovative fund, the first of its kind at the University, is used to encourage annual giving to the Faculty. It is presented annually to the alumni year that raises the largest combined contribution for the Faculty in the calendar year October 1–September 30 on a matching dollar-for-dollar basis, up to a maximum of $10,000. The class is recognized at the Sir William Macdonald Luncheon during Homecoming every year, with the class year being inscribed on a plaque that is kept in the Centennial Centre.
Collective Giving: Reunion Class Gifts (RCGs)
So now is the time to think about how you and your classmates can make a difference through collective giving. If you are interested in a Reunion Class Gift (RCG), a project led by a class usually in recognition of an anniversary year or milestone anniversary, then start the conversation. There have been numerous RCGs over the years that have raised thousands of dollars for various special projects, all in support of the Faculty and our students. They are successful because there is power in collective giving! Even if your class doesn’t pursue this initiative, classes are given equal opportunity for the Finlayson Enhancement Award; as an added incentive, two classes will be recognized at Homecoming 2021 – so the added incentive is there to raise awareness.
Please make your annual fund gift to AES today, knowing that every gift has the power to make a difference.
